In this tutorial, we will see how to install Linux Kernel 3.0 in openSUSE 11.4, which will replace your current Kernel version (2.6.37). The Linux Kernel 3.0  brings the following new features:

  • Btrfs Data Scrubbing
  • Microsoft Kinect Support
  • More Hardaware driver Support
  • Apple iSight Webcam Support
  • AMD Llano Fusion APU Support
  • XEN Dom0 Support
  • Automatic Defragmentation, etc.

To check the current installed Kernel, run this command via the Terminal:

uname -r

For my case, I got this:

~> uname -r
2.6.37.1-1.2-default

To install Linux Kernel 3.0 on openSUSE 11.4, run these commands from the Terminal:

su -c 'zypper addrepo --refresh http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard Kernel:stable'

su -c 'zypper in --from Kernel:stable kernel-desktop'

Then follow setup instructions (read prompts carefully!).

Refresh now the repositories with this command:

su -c 'zypper refresh'

When you finish, reboot your system. You have now installed Linux Kernel 3.0 on openSUSE 11.4. That's it!
