In this guide we will show you two useful commands for converting any media file to 3GP.  The 3GP format is used mainly on 3G mobile phones and on some 2G and 4G mobile phones.

To convert a media file (avi, mp4, mpg, flv, etc.) into 3GP on a Linux-based system, then you need to install first the ffmpeg tools. You can install it on Debian-based system with this command:

sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

For RPM-based syustems (Fedora), run these three commands:

rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm
yum install ffmpeg

Then cd to the folder containing the target video file and run one of these two commands:

ffmpeg -i input.avi output.3gp

ffmpeg -i input.avi -s qcif -vcodec h263 -r 20 -b 180k -acodec libfaac -ab 64k -ac 2 -ar 22050 output.3gp

Replace "input.avi" with the name of your video file. The 3GP file will be created in the current folder having this name: output.3gp.
