In this tip, we will see the command to use in order to uncompress an archive file while being downloaded. By doing this, you will avoid the hassle of downloading the file on your computer and uncompressing it later using your archive manager or via the terminal.

Get Started

Launch the terminal and issue this command:

wget URL -O - | tar xfz -

Replace URL with the URL of your archive file you want to download.

Here is an example:

wget http://launchpad.net/inkscape/0.48.x/0.48/+download/inkscape-0.48.0.tar.gz -O - | tar xfz -

Note: This command is tested under Ubuntu 10.10.
