In this article, we will see the command used to record a computer screen output (screencast) and save it into an avi file.

Get Started

Before starting, you need first to install the latest version of ffmpeg. Then launch the terminal and issue this command to start recording your computer screen output:

 ffmpeg -f x11grab -r 25 -s 1680x1050 -i :0.0 /home/steve/Desktop/output.avi

You have to replace 1680x1050 with your own screen resolution. Also, replace /home/steve/Desktop/output.avi with the directory path you want to save your AVI output file in.

To stop recording, simply press [Q]. An AVI file will be generated in the selected path.

That's it.
