How to Make Coffee Steam in Gimp

In this tutorial, we will learn how to add a little cloud of steam at the top of a cup of coffee using Gimp. There are many methods for adding steam effects in Gimp.
In this tutorial, I will use the easiest method that consists of using Photoshop smoke brushes in order to add coffee steam. To learn how to install them in Gimp, check this tutorial. Here is the result that we will get at the end of this tutorial:

Get Started

1. Here is the starting image that we are going to use in this tutorial:

2. Launch Gimp and open the picture by pressing CTRL+O.

3. Create now a new transparent layer by clicking Layer > New Layer. Name it Steam for example.

4. On this new layer, you need to create coffee steam using Photoshop smoke brushes you are required to install at the beginning of this tutorial. To do this, click the Paintbrush Tool button, click the button placed next to the Brush label, then select the smoke brush that best fits with your picture.

5. Now place the cloud of steam at the top of the cup of coffee. If the cloud of steam you select is horizontal, don't worry, you can rotate and move it using Move & Rotate tools shown on the toolbox.

6. After moving and rotating many times the cloud of steam, to make it fit with the top of the cup of coffee, I got this rather convincing result:

7. When done, you can save and export your new manipulated picture. That's it.
