If you want to get details about the running Linux and Kernel version, open the terminal and run this command:


uname -a && cat /etc/*release

You will get results similar to these:

~$ uname -a && cat /etc/*release
Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 06:07:29 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
