Install Gnash and Swfdec Flash Movie Players in Fedora

Adobe Falsh Player is not the only solution to use in your web browser, there are some alternatives such as Gnash and Swfdec.

1. Gnash Installation

Gnash is an open source flash movie player that can be used in web browsers to run flash videos, applications, etc.

To install Gnash, open the terminal by going to Applications >> System Tools >> Terminal. First, you need to log in as root in the terminal, so run this command:

    su -

To begin the installation of Gnash, run this command:

    yum install gnash

To install Gnash plug-in for web browsers such as Firefox, Epiphany, etc., then execute this command:

    yum install gnash-plugin

For Konqueror web browser, run this command:

    yum install gnash-klash

Gnash is now based on the GStreamer library. To read FLV files, you need to install the following GStreamer plugins:

yum install gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-ffmpeg

2. Swfdec Installation

Swfdec is a flash movie player that belongs to Freedesktop project. To install Swfdec, run the following command:

    yum install swfdec

To install Mozilla Firefox plug-in, you need to install swfdec-mozilla package:

    yum install  swfdec-mozilla

Swfdec also uses the GStreamer library as Gnash. So we need to install this plug-in by executing this command in the terminal:

yum install gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-ffmpeg
