Fdupes is a command line utility for Linux that allows to search for duplicate files in any directory you choose. The utility is capable of detecting duplicate files, even though their names are different. Fdupes can compare files in terms of size and MD5 signature of files.

Fdupes Installation

Open the terminal in an RPM distribution, then run this command:

yum install fdupes

In a Debian distribution, run this command:

sudo apt-get install fdupes

    Example 1

We use -r optin to force Fdupes to scan a directory and all its sub-directories:

fdupes -r directory

    Example 2

If we want to compare two directories, then use this command:

fdupes -r dir1 dir2
