Do you like this story?
This question was asked frequently in the past and still raises nowadays.
Gamers of Pop Fiction have answered this question by saying that it is possible for Mario to jump over the flagpole in only level 3-3. Let's see in this funny video how can Mario jump over the flagpole:

you can do it on other levels besides 3-3 it's just harder to get over and everytime you do it you get stuck on the other side. I haven't played mario in probably 10 year but still remember doing it alot.

There are many different versions of Super Mario Bros, but the game listed above is the original NES game. Perhaps, there are other levels where Mario could jump over the flagpole.

I did this on accident once but it was on world 1 somewhere

That's not the only level you can jump over the flag pole in. In some levels, if you pass the flag pole it leads you to a warp pipe that goes all the way back to level 1.

you can also hit bowser and turn into a small fireball mario. Only did it once back when we didn't have fancy computers.

I did this in 1987.

yes, to elaborate on chris D's comment, if you land on the axe and bowser's nose simultaneously, it will glitch out the game so that mushrooms will shrink you and taking damage makes you grow. Fire flowers will change your color, but you will still be small except for the one frame of animation when you throw a fireball. For that one frame you will temporarily be shown full size, then right back down again.

@John Marek
It was the Japanese Mario 2 where you could routinely clear flagpoles and find a warp back to level 1. There was a pipe or a small hole to jump in and kill yourself.
The game is sometimes called "The Lost Levels", but it was Mario 2, released in Japan in 1986-7. I have it on Wii console. It will make you want to kill yourself.

Anybody with a game genie considers this incredibly old news.
